Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice-President of Federal Policy and Industry Relations, the Director of Federal Fair Housing Policy will be responsible for providing strategic vision, regulatory and legislative analysis and industry relations related to federal fair housing policy.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop advocacy strategy on federal fair housing policy issues working closely with NAR’s senior management and volunteer members.
  • Manage regulatory and legislative analysis on federal policy proposals related to equity and fairness in real estate including racial and ethnic equality, fair housing, ADA, disability rights, LGBTQ equality, religious freedom, support for families, and gender equality.
  • Convey NAR policy positions and housing industry trends to key real estate industry stakeholders, regulatory agency decision makers, Congressional Committee and Members of Congress and their staffs through in person meetings as well as Congressional letters, testimony and regulatory comment letters
  • Staff a NAR Policy Committee, including two annual Committee business meetings and other committee work including presidential advisory groups and works groups.
  • Collaborate with NAR’s member engagement team to involve housing industry multicultural groups in federal fair housing policy issues.
  • Collaborate with NAR’s communications team on effective strategies to highlight NAR’s policy positions to NAR members, industry trade groups and the public through summits, webinars, videos and social media.
  • Work with NAR’s Member Engagement, legal and Member Development teams to identify member fair housing training needs.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
 

Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years’ experience working on civil rights issues related to housing equity/fair housing in a federal agency, Capitol Hill, and/or in the private sector.  Alternate experience demonstrating knowledge of and experience addressing equity and fairness in real estate coupled with knowledge and experience related to federal public policy will be considered.
  • Familiarity with the real estate industry and membership or trade associations preferred 
  • Masters’ Degree or Juris Doctor Degree with a focus on civil rights, public policy or real estate preferred
  • Experience working with and knowledge of national organizations representing African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, LGBTQ, persons with disabilities, families, or veterans a plus.
  • Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation
  • Results oriented with high attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to think in innovative ways to find solutions to problems
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office—Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
