Position Summary:
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel and Vice President of Legal Affairs, the Associate Counsel will support NAR’s legal team on a variety of legal issues affecting the real estate industry and the operation of a trade association.  The ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, analytical, and presentation skills.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research, analyze, and keep current on legal issues and laws, legislation, regulations and court decisions affecting the real estate industry, and the operation of trade associations and not for profit corporations. 
  • Assist NAR members, as well as local and state REALTOR® associations and their legal counsel by responding to general legal inquiries, providing legal information and analysis of relevant issues, developing risk management materials for publication, and identifying new legal developments of interest to NAR and its members.
  • Draft legal memorandums, white papers, and briefs to support or provide advice related to decisions and activities of NAR, its affiliated organizations, and members.
  • Present legal education programs to NAR members, local and state REALTOR® association executives, members, and association legal counsel, and NAR Staff.
  • Conceptualize, research, and write legal articles for NAR and its’ affiliate publications.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) with current license to practice law in good standing
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house counsel position
  • Outstanding leadership and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with internal and external teams
  • Knowledge of the real estate industry
  • Experience with nonprofit tax law, ant-trust law, commercial leasing, and/or trademark a plus
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to present to large groups with poise and confidence
  • Results oriented with high attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to think in innovative ways to find creative solutions to problems
  • Positive attitude
  • Strong customer relations and interpersonal skills with a high level of response to all inquiries
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office—Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
