Position Summary:
The NAR Library and Archives is seeking a graduate-level Library or Information Science student interested in gaining real-world experience and enhancing professional development in a career in Library Sciences. This externship experience will provide an opportunity to work in the world’s largest real estate library and assist with archival processing, arrangement, and description of both analog and digital materials in NAR’s archival collection focused on the history of the organization and the history of real estate more broadly, as well as an opportunity to assist with general reference and outreach support. This role is a 10-12 week, part-time externship (20 hrs/week) in NAR’s Chicago office, requiring on-site work. This externship can either be paid or count as course credit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize arrangement and description standards to process analog and digital archival records.
- Update Research Guides (finding aids) for unprocessed materials or additions to processed series.
- Rehouse analog materials into appropriate archival folders and boxes.
- Collaborate on archival reference requests to efficiently and effectively answer member and association staff inquiries.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program in Library and/or Information Science.
- Knowledge, work experience, or coursework in archival processing, reference and outreach, and an interest in business archives.
- Familiarity with archival standards (DACS) preferred
- Experience with library management systems
- Strong organizational skills that reflect an ability to manage projects and prioritize work.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to focus on repetitive tasks for an extended period.
- Collaborative, yet able to work independently with initial guidance. Motivated by improved outcomes and results.
- Professional-level written and verbal communication skills.
- Positive Attitude.
- Current computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office.
