Position Summary:
The Director of Impact Litigation will be responsible for planning and managing NAR’s support of litigation and other strategic initiatives that advance the association’s policy objectives related to property rights, housing opportunity, and homeownership access. The position serves under the supervision of the association’s Vice President, Policy Advocacy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify, propose, and coordinate the association’s participation (either as parties or as friends of the court) in impact litigation involving issues of significant interest to National Association of REALTORS®;
- Work with state and local REALTOR® associations, NAR affiliate organizations, and industry partners to develop and coordinate the most effective legal strategies on common litigation issues;
- Advocate with Congress and the Executive Branch on policy issues which advance the interests of the members of the National Association of REALTORS®;
- Identify, analyze, and monitor emerging issues at the federal, state, and local level to assess potential impact on property owners, renters, real estate, and real-estate industry professionals; propose and coordinate NAR initiatives to protect and promote the interests of the aforementioned parties.
- Serve as the Co-Staff Executive for NAR’s Business Issues governance committee;
- Work with government, industry trade associations, housing-advocacy groups, civil-rights groups and others to build coalitions to advance positions and interests of the National Association of REALTORS®;
- Develop and disseminate testimony, formal comments, letters, white papers, published articles related to property ownership, property rights, busineC0ss issues, and other policies and interests of the association;
- Develop and maintain dialogue with industry organizations, congressional committee staff, Administration and agency officials, state and local Realtor® associations;
- Deliver public presentations and speak in the media on behalf of the National Association of REALTORS®;
- Provide content for NAR communications, including articles, advocacy resources, and issue summaries, to be shared with NAR members and through NAR’s communication channels and website;
- Manage consultants assisting the association on legal matters, strategic initiatives, and business issues;
- Coordinate the association’s response to federal, state, or local litigation bearing on real estate and the interests of the National Association of REALTORS®; and
- Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate;
- Must be currently admitted and maintain the license to practice law in one or more states of the United States or in the District of Columbia;
- At least 10 years of related advocacy experience at a law firm, government agency, Congressional Office, trade association, lobbying and consulting firm, or public-relations firm, including experience managing or directing legal activities;
- Experience communicating, negotiating, or partnering with law firms to advance public policy;
- Ability to work collaboratively and develop partnerships with trade associations, industry partners, and government entities;
- Ability to craft positions and arguments to persuade people of diverse backgrounds and political viewpoints;
- Exceptional communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation;
- Highly organized; ability to multi-task and excellent follow-up and follow-through skills
- Results-oriented with high attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment;
- Ability to think in innovative ways to find solutions to problems and to develop strategies that cut across multiple issue areas;
- Strong customer relations and interpersonal skills with a high level of response to all inquiries;
- Ability to travel up to 30%.
